“Let the Party begin…”
A not-to-be-missed exhibit to mark the 150th anniversary of the Carnevale di Viareggio
The "Lorenzo Viani" Modern and Contemporary Art Gallery in Viareggio hosts a major art exhibition to mark the 150th anniversary of the Carnevale di Viareggio. A journey through the history of tradition of allegorical floats in Italy and through the Italian commedia dell’arte masks that originated in the 16th Century and evolved until 1931, when the mask of Burlamacco, designed by Uberto Bonetti, made its debut at the Carnival of Viareggio. The exhibit illustrates these two facets of the history and tradition of the Carnevale di Viareggio from 1873 to 2023 through the more than 90 artworks created between the 17th and 20th centuries ranging from paintings and drawings to engravings. All made possible thanks to the collaboration of important Italian museums, banking foundations, archives, libraries and private collectors. “Let the Party begin … (Che la Festa cominci…) weaves a seamless narrative that identifies and enhances the relationship between the Carnival of Viareggio and Italian tradition from the 1600s onwards. At the same time, the exhibit highlights the role of allegorical floats as a means to catch a glimpse of what 17th century Italian society was like through the depiction of the different Carnivals celebrated all around the Country.
