and the Foundation
The Viareggio Carnival begins with the tradition of the Parades on Shrove Tuesday in 1873. Thanks to the initiative of artists and organizers, it has grown in popularity, attracting visitors from around the world.
The Carnival is a tribute to creativity: artists and craftsmen come together to bring to life spectacular allegorical floats, turning the parades into a showcase of talent and imagination. Blending traditional elements with modern techniques and technologies, the Viareggio Carnival is a harmonious fusion of past and present, innovation and tradition.
The floats are true works of art that offer a unique and satirical perspective on contemporary society, providing entertainment but also food for thought.
Ultimately, the Carnival acts as a catalyst for community cohesion. Annually, the community comes together in a festive atmosphere, sharing laughter, joy, and creating bonds that extend beyond the celebration itself.
The Viareggio Carnival Foundation has been organizing the event since 1987. Its task is to manage the event, upholding the artistic, historical, and cultural values of the tradition. Its mission also includes the enhancement of the Citadel and its Museums.
The ticket office is located at the Carnival Citadel on Via Santa Maria Goretti 5, 55049 Viareggio (Lucca).
